Ghetto Wall- Warsaw by Starlo Galetta

Starlo Galetta

All I had to look at
before I was aware
was a little girl’s diary
about the
star
she had to wear.

I learned her hopes and dreams
and it seemed
I knew her.

All I could
understand
was that

HATRED

can run so deep
that prejudice
and
ambivalence
are in tandem
with
Despair.

All we could learn
as those
whom have come
after
is that
THEY
can be
US or THEM
or
HER or HIM.

Nothing separates us.

I can hear
the prayers,
the pain,
the footsteps of the past
intertwined
in my mind
like the ashes
that fell
from the sky.

WHY?

All they had

was each other,
child
father
mother
wrapped in LOVE
cloaked in a shared
humanity.

PEOPLE

brothers
sisters
aunts
uncles
grandparents
cousins

like the layers of brick
mortared
together
through time and space
at this place
where
HOPE
all but died.
