As I was preparing to leave for Germany, there were a few places I knew I wanted to visit and experience, one of them was The Jewish Museum Berlin. With it’s incredible and meaningful architecture to the mesmerizing physical and visual exhibitions, it did not disappoint. In this museum you will not just see the artifacts or read numerous facts. You will be emmersed in the exhibits as they bring to life all of the emotions experienced in the past by people who were Jewish.
It all started on our tour with the very first hallways, designed to make you uncomfortable and simulate choices which were forced upon people who were Jewish. We were guided by our tour guide throughout unique aspects of the museum, from top to bottom and even on the stairs. This included varying rooms and pieces where Jewish culture was not just represented but also reflected in ways which can give guests a greater understanding of the culture through experience. Showcasing many Jewish people who have made great contributions to society in their Hall of Fame was colorful and left me wanting to learn more about each name and face on the wall.
My favorite part of the museum was a hidden gem at the end, Mesubin: The Gathered by Yael Reuveny. In this video installation you will see various individuals, of all ages, genders, and races, describe how they see and define their Judaism and how it connects to their life in Germany. Watching these videos allows guests of the museum to take in how their is numerous ways to look and identify as Jewish. That each person has their own unique connection to not just the religion but also the culture of Judaism. Yet, staying for the end of the video is must as it has a beautiful moment where all of the individuals come together and showcase the beauty of how Judaism truly connects us all.
