Members Only Content

LESSON PLAN OVERVIEW

This lesson provides a structure for educators to guide students in comparing two texts: Primo Levi’s Survival in Auschwitz (estimated Lexile 1210) and Journey with Howard Chandler, an app available from Classrooms Without Borders, which can be requested here. Please note that Journey with Howard Chandler is available only on iOS at this time. The lesson is intended to complement a book study of Survival in Auschwitz. Teachers could supplement or replace these texts with others, such as Art Spiegelman’s Maus, or oral histories available on Historic Pittsburgh and processed by Archives & Special Collections, University of Pittsburgh Library System and shared with their permission.

After comparing the texts, students may engage in an academic writing exercise. Prompts are provided.

This resource aligns with Common Core Standards, PA Core Standards and the Pennsylvania Public School Code Act 70 requirements of Holocaust, Genocide, and Human Rights Violations Instruction.
