On January 28, 2025, at Michael’s on East in Sarasota, SRQ Media honored ten individuals for their significant contributions to local nonprofits during the annual Giving Coast and Good Hero Awards luncheon. Among the honorees was young philanthropist Ethan Ruben, celebrated for his dedication to the “Walk a Teacher to Poland” fundraiser, part of the Classrooms Without Borders initiative. This program enables middle and high school teachers to travel to Poland, deepening their understanding of anti-Semitism, the Holocaust, Israel, and Jewish history. These educators then return to share their experiences, fostering awareness and combating prejudice among students.
Ethan’s commitment led to the organization of a walk-a-thon at Cardinal Mooney High School, successfully raising funds to send two of its teachers, along with four other Sarasota educators and one student, to Poland. Beyond fundraising, Ethan engaged the community, secured widespread donations, sent personalized thank-you notes, and provided regular updates to donors. The Ruben family is now preparing for the upcoming 2025 “Walk a Teacher to Poland” event on March 2, 2025.
Stefan Gates, a participating teacher from Cardinal Mooney, emphasized the program’s impact: “As an educator of the Holocaust, it is my duty and responsibility to understand the magnitude of what happened and to be the voice for the victims who can no longer speak.” Ethan Ruben’s efforts exemplify a profound commitment to education, empathy, and community engagement.
