Our day (Day 7 in Israel) began with a trip to Mt. of Olives, specifically the Garden of Gethsemane. This is a special site in Christianity for three reasons. First, it is believed to be the place where Jesus went to contemplate and pray about his upcoming arrest and death. Second, the New Testament of the Bible also describes Gethsemane as the place where Jesus’ apostle, Judas Iscariot, betrays his teacher with a kiss on the cheek. Lastly, some believe that Jesus ascended to heaven after his death and resurrection from this location. The view from the Garden of Gethsemane and the church located next to it (Church of All Nations) was spectacular and offered a great view of Jerusalem and the Temple Mount across the valley. The Dome of the Rock stands out prominently and is a site I am excited to visit tomorrow.
Another highlight of the day was our visit to the Church of the Holy Sepulcher. This space is visited by Christians from all over the world as two of the most significant events of the faith are believed to have occurred here: Jesus’ death and subsequent resurrection. The church was destroyed several times, so the artifacts may not be original but the significance is still there for many and it was interesting to see visitors pay their respect and devotion. The site contained the rock that is believed to be the site of Jesus’ crucifixion. We had the opportunity to stick our hands into a hole covering the rock in order to touch it (how can you resist!). Next visitors could touch a replica of the rock slab that Jesus was prepared for burial on. Lastly there was a replica of the tomb Jesus was laid to rest in. No matter what you believe it is an amazing to see so many historical sites referenced in the Bible, a book that many people live their life by. I feel fortunate and very thankful to be on such an amazing and fascinating trip.
