Children’s Village 2019: 3/25/19 blog by Yiwei Wang

In the morning we went to two local workshops. We first visited a chocolate shop and experienced the process of making chocolates and cakes! The entire bakery was fascinating and beautiful. Everyone had their own masterpieces during the decoration step.

Then we went to a music workshop, which is inside a reformed synagogue and our music was directed by the Children’s Village’s band teacher. We learned to play a drum called Darbuka (its name was originated for the Arabic work “darab” — strike). The way we introduced ourselves were very special: each person, without any speaking or judgement, plays four series of beats; and the rest of people would imitate him or her. There was a huge diversity of what kinds of beat each one of us played: random or organized, short or long, quiet or loud… This was how ancient people would sit in a family and have fun together, delivering their thoughts by music. Then we played two songs together and went back to the Village for the afternoon-night service.
