Day 2 (Russ) – Israel Arts & Culture 2017

By: Russ Bellamy

Today was an eventful and busy day.  We began with a trip to the Al-Jazar Mosque in Akko.  It was an interesting tale of the defeat of Napoleon and an impressive architectural feat.   We also visited the Tsippori National park to see a wonderful example of mosaic trompe-l’oeil.  The Mona Lisa of the Galilee is subtle in its use of light, pose and emotion, which shows true mastery of the medium

and process.  We then moved to the Basilica of the Annunciation.  The architecture was built around an unfinished Byzantine Church, but the more contemporary structure seemed to mimic steel girders constructed out of stone and concrete.  The mathematical style and triangulation seemed an appropriate framework for a large series of mosaics from around the world.  Each country represented and interpreted the annunciation with a variety of images, materials and styles.

Our next stop was the Misgav region.  Here we began with a musical demonstration reminiscent of Nick Cave’s sound suits.  Sheer Sofer’s talents were incredible to say the least.  He utilized techniques learned in Mongolia to produce a dual harmonious voice that was misunderstood, haunting and somewhat surreal.  He also had an ability to mimic the sounds of nature to create compositions that were relaxing, provocative and visually stimulating.  In Misgav wealso participated in the “Piece for Peace” quilting project, which is an inspiring challenge that will either result in a 1 million piece quilt, or a peace treaty.  This seems like a hopeful and motivated project and has incorporated works from across the globe.  We then met with our host families and went to view a painting exhibition by Esti Naali’ exhibition at Karmiel Cultural Hall.

The day was eventful, inspiring and informative.  It was very nice to come to a local family’s home, discuss the region, our interests, art, and our place in the world.  This seems like the most effective way to get to know the perspectives of others and to get a better understanding of daily life in Israel.  These experiences will certainly be some of the most powerful experiences of the trip.
