Day 3 – Hanna | Letters from the Children’s Village 2016

Rainbow over Akko
Rainbow over Akko

Today we went to the Lebanon border and then to the Akko, a UNESCO World Heritage site, where we learned a lot of history about the Old City. We toured the compound and got a chance to buy some cool jewelry. Then we went to a nearby restaurant for lunch, where we had amazing falafel and hummus. In the afternoon, we returned to our michpachtons in the village. We went on the playground, played basketball, listened to music, and painted each other’s nails. After dinner with our families we went to have a dessert at a really good chocolate restaurant and we all had Belgian waffles. I can’t wait for another day in the village!!

What did you learn today:

Hanna: That there are birds and cats everywhere in Israel

Sophia: I learned about Napoleon coming to Akko

Annie: I learned that there are a lot of fresh markets in Israel and a lot of talented artists from people who make leather jewelry to glass makers and painters

Emily: I learned that Akko is an ancient city which has been conquered several times throughout history by groups such as the Byzantines and the crusaders

Bella: I learned that you can’t get across the Lebanon border by the Mediterranean Sea.

Olivia: I learned that in the dungeons in Akko the authorities chained people up. This was evident by the large holes and marks left behind.
