Day 4 | Letters from the Children’s Village 2017

Written By: Lauren Levy and Anna Elias

This morning after breakfast at the Children’s Village, we left for Holon, which is a city right outside of Tel Aviv. We arrived at the Museum of the Blind a little before 10:30, where we drank coffee and waited for our tour in the dark to begin.
Our tour was led by Liron, a blind man, who made us comfortable through his abundance of puns. He led us into complete darkness through a jungle, a city, a house, a cafeteria, a boat, a market, and a music room! For an hour and a half, we were able to face the challenges that
people who are blind face every day. This was truly an eyeopening experience- no pun 2017-03-24-PHOTO-00000106intended. My favorite parts of the tour were the music room and the cafeteria. I loved the music room because we laid down on the floor and felt the vibrations of the music on our backs. I was able to appreciate the various types of music being played more than ever because I could focus in on my hearing and touch, rather than my sight. I also enjoyed the cafeteria at the end because we sat down around a table with Liron, still in pitch black, where he told us his story. He acknowledged that we had gone from shuffling through the darkness to taking regular strides with confidence. He told us that the most important thing in life is being able to adapt and that anyone can adapt to anything. I know that this is an experience that will stick with me forever.

Our next destination was a unique graffiti tour throughout Florentine, an up-and-coming neighborhood in Tel Aviv. We spent an hour and a half experiencing what Israeli life is like through the eyes of mainstream graffiti artists, while also learning a little bit of history about the area. The tour was completely different from anything else we’ve done so far, and the colorful art made for great memories and photos.
