Greece 2019: CONNECTED | a poem by Betsy Lamitina

Connected by our stories
Who are we?
Teachers, administrators, doctors, nurses, parents, future leaders
But more
also Jews, Catholics, Christians, Atheists, searching
But still more
Cuban, Serbian, African-American, Italian, Polish, Israeli
But more
Mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, cousins, aunts, husbands
But still more. Too much to even add.

What connects us?
Our stories
Our passion
Our intellect
Our sense of adventure
Our responsibility
Our voice

Joined together in our purpose
To uplift the voices of those silenced
To continue the stories of those who have left us
To understand the experiences of others
All to bring each of us closer together.

We are the ripple makers,
The tiny pebble dropped
Sending out our little part into the giant pond
In the hopes of continuing our work so that we never forget
So that we understand each other
So we break down boundaries
And connect our hearts so that all is not lost.

Who are we?
Learners
Connected by our stories

Betsy Lamitina is a teacher at Winchester Thurston School.
