Today was a very interesting day, and spanned a wide range of history. We started in the Golan in modern history (this century) and spoke a great deal about recent conflicts that helped to shape modern Israel. The Golan heights have certainly seen more than a fair share of conflict, and we visited a few observation sites that gave us a look into some of Israel’s not-so-friendly neighbors. It’s hard to imagine that what is now a tourist attraction was not that long ago an important strategic site.
On the complete opposite end of the historical spectrum, we got to visit an ancients synagogue that is being rebuilt. It’s a very important site because they have over 90% of the original materials, and found them where they originally fell. This gave archaeologists the opportunity to catalog them, and now start the long process of rebuilding. It’s amazing to think that this rubble will once again be a place for weddings and bar mitzvahs.
