Prior to today, I was mostly impacted by the Israeli religious sites and the interesting symbolism reflected in many of the stories. As I was standing on an old Israeli military base overlooking the Syrian border, I heard a “boom” and saw smoke rising in the distance from a bomb exploding. As Avi continued to eloquently explain the civil unrest in Syria and the conflict between the two countries, I felt an incredible sense of smallness yet graciousness for being in the world. The reality of all the Middle Eastern conflict I’ve seen and heard on the news was happening right before my eyes. The dubious nature of the event was even more pronounced by the Israeli party which was happening about 10 miles behind me complete with dancing music and colorful tents. The possibility of death in front of me and the promise of life behind me was a truly powerful moment.
