Wieliczka Salt Mines (Jeff) – Poland Personally 2017

By: Jeff Biros

IMG_4469On Sunday we went to see the Wieliczka Salt Mines. In relationship to the depth and heaviness of what we have studied so far, the salt mines seemed like a break from it all. It was amazing to see the salt pillars and the chapel was a testament to human ingenuity. When I was thinking about the mines and how difficult it was to eventually get electricity there, that positive aspect of human ingenuity was in stark contrast to the diabolical and dastardly ingenuity it took to create the concentration camps! From that perspective, it was fitting and hopeful for our amazing trip to end focusing on the positive and productive side of human ingenuity rather than the negative.

On a personal note, it was so great to experience this trip! What will always stand out to me will be the phenomenal people–both students and adults–who shared part of their lives with me. I can’t wait for the reunions and continuation of friendships. It reaffirms my hope of a world with good and decent people. Thank you, everyone!
