Poland Personally Blog 1 By Chessa Crum

I thought I was prepared.

This encompasses so much

I thought I was prepared to travel. It’s been years since I’ve been on a plane but I haven’t been on a long flight since I was 18 years old.

It was a lot to travel so far. Multiple flights and an overnight. First world problems.

I was not prepared.

I was not prepared for what the rabbi said at our first group  dinner. It was something along the lines of “…you are traveling to Poland and experiencing very sad places. But when you leave Poland do not leave Poland sad. Leave Poland knowing how lucky you are that your life was not like that.

I was not prepared.

I was not prepared to see the mass grave memorial at the Jewish cemetery. I watch the documentary A film unfinished and one of the many parts where I cried was when they showed the mass graves. To see it in person and know that 60,000 human beings were buried in that place.

I was not prepared…

But this is the educational experience of a lifetime.

This is so important to learn so this never happens again.

It is so important to hear from a survivor their first hand account of what he experienced.

I was not prepared…

But I want to know everything.

This is so important.

I cannot wait to see what else I am not prepared for.
