We went to Auschwitz today. The concentration camp was large, seeming similar in size to Majdanek. It was also full of terrible spaces, torture rooms and gas chambers. We then went to Birkenau, where we listened to Howard’s story more. His connection to Birkenau is tragic, but one we can all learn from. We could see all of the barracks which the prisoners like Howard stayed in, and we saw the infamous main entrance & railway. The entire camp itself was visibly terrible and it was abundantly clear, in spite of the destroyed and gone gas chambers/crematoriums, that Birkenau was a place of and remains a symbol of evil.
