Classrooms Without Borders is thrilled to announce the upcoming Germany Close Up Fellowship, an open program for young professionals. This immersive experience offers a unique opportunity to delve into Germany’s rich history, culture, and contemporary issues through a carefully curated itinerary.
Participants will begin their journey in Munich, where they will have the chance to explore historical treasures such as Nymphenburg Castle and the Alte Pinakothek. The program officially kicks off with a welcome and orientation session, followed by a tour of the Ohel Jakob Synagogue and a walking tour of Munich. The day will culminate in dinner with members of the local Jewish community, fostering connections and dialogue.
A day dedicated to remembrance will feature a guided tour of the Dachau Memorial and the Munich Documentation Center for the History of National Socialism. Participants will engage in group discussions to reflect on these impactful visits, deepening their understanding of Germany’s complex past.
The journey continues to Nuremberg, with tours of the former Nazi Party Rally Grounds and the Memorium Nuremberg Trials, offering insights into the city’s historical significance and its role in post-war justice. Participants will then travel to Berlin, starting with a guided tour of the city, including a visit to the Bavarian Quarter, which poignantly commemorates the Jewish residents persecuted during the Nazi era.
In Berlin, the program will delve into German politics with meetings at the German Federal Foreign Office and a walking tour of Jewish Berlin-Mitte. Participants will join Shabbat services and dinner with the local congregation, offering a unique glimpse into contemporary Jewish life in Germany.
Shabbat will offer optional programming, including services and a boat tour, allowing participants to unwind and reflect on their experiences so far. A day of remembrance in Berlin will include visits to the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, Track 17, and the House of the Wannsee Conference. An alternative tour of the Liebermann Villa will be available for those interested in art and culture.
A study day focused on contemporary issues will include discussions on initiatives against antisemitism and Holocaust education in Germany. The program will conclude with a farewell dinner, celebrating the friendships and insights gained throughout the seminar.
